    James Sherrard

    FOUNDER OF HUMANITAS LEARNING

    #fhtogglels/Read Full Bio/Close/eb

Greetings! I am a charismatic and highly accomplished educator with a first-class master’s degree from King’s College London. As the founder of Humanitas Learning, I have thousands of hours of experience tutoring English, Philosophy, and Religious Studies from GCSE to undergraduate level. Additionally, I am a Philosophy PhD candidate at the University of Warwick, researching Hegel’s aesthetic theory.

I began tutoring ten years ago while completing my BA in Philosophy and Politics at the University of Sheffield, undertaking a teacher training module which included a placement at the award-winning Silverdale School. Finishing top of my class, I was asked to stay on and continue teaching while concluding my own studies. I proceeded to complete my MA in Philosophy at King’s College London, achieving the highest mark on my course (87) for my paper on Heidegger, graduating with distinction overall. I channelled my expertise into my PhD research and am proud to be working with some of the world's leading philosophers at the University of Warwick.

Building on my academic success, I worked as a Learning and Curriculum Manager for schools in Yorkshire, and as a private tutor for some of the UK’s leading agencies. This gave me expert knowledge of the syllabi and mark schemes across all examining bodies. Noticing a lack of expert tutoring companies specialising in the humanities, I founded Humanitas Learning in 2023, establishing a talented team of scholars, and a large network of ambitious students.

My wide-ranging expertise and compassionate, personalised approach allow me to quickly identify a student’s unique needs and develop a learning plan that’s right for them. I’ve helped GCSE English pupils to rise from Level 4 to Level 9 and guided A-level students into top universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. I currently work with students at top schools, including Harrow, Eton and Saint Paul’s School, and assist with prestigious essay competitions, including the John Locke Institute's Global Essay Prize. As an undergraduate tutor, I have worked with students at Cambridge, UCL and Kuwait University – helping one to ascend from an average mark of 35 to an overall grade of 78 and a place on a PhD course.

Drawing on my research interests, I recently delivered a talk at Yale University Art Gallery, and created a highly original webinar on business ethics for corporate clients. I live in Leamington Spa with my wife and enjoy hiking, jazz, and writing poetry.

  • Ben Huntley History and English Language Tutor

    Ben Huntley

    TUTOR OF HISTORY AND ENGLISH

    #fhtogglels/Read Full Bio/Close/eb

Hello, my name is Ben. I tutor history and English Language at Humanitas Learning. I firmly believe that, if you think those subjects are boring, you’ve been taught them wrong! As well as providing dynamic and stimulating tutoring sessions, I create content for Humanitas, including model answers and you will see me pop up in several of our videos.

I’ve always been interested in the past, but I can trace my love of history back to year 3 and one teacher who opened my eyes to it. At school I achieved 6 A* and 5 A grades at GCSE, 2 A grades, one in English Language, and an A* in A-Level history. Progressing to university, I achieved a first-class honours degree in German and History from the University of Warwick in 2016, and have recently completed my Masters in Public History at the University of York, graduating with a distinction in February 2024 having achieved a mark of 80 in my dissertation. In January 2025 I started studying for my PhD at Bournemouth University in the history of motorsport. I also share my love of history by attending and speaking at multiple history conferences, most recently at the International Motor Racing Research Center in Watkins Glen, NY.

But my teaching style goes beyond just academia. I have learned through my tutoring experience that students gain the most when they truly enjoy a subject. One of my former students even said after one session that she was enjoying German grammar! My background in and passion for theatre has given me a charismatic, confident, personable style, and I guarantee enjoyable, fun-filled lessons, packed with discussions around the topic and characters involved, while also sharing my skill for academia and doing well in those pesky exams. Throughout my Masters, I have been proofreading my colleagues’ essays, offering feedback on structure, style, flow and so on. I have also given a summary of my dissertation at an academic conference, which was described by one viewer as a “tour de force of public speaking”.

I’m looking forward to meeting with you, developing a passion for history and the English language with you, and unlocking your potential with confidence in the classroom and beyond. Let’s make history!

  • Sarah Limb

    Sarah Limb

    TUTOR OF HISTORY

    #fhtogglels/Read Full Bio/Close/eb

Hello! My name is Sarah and I’m a History tutor here at Humanitas Learning.

I graduated with a First-Class BA in History from the University of Southampton in 2019, followed by a MA with Distinction in World History from King’s College London in 2021. I am currently in the final year of my PhD in History, also at King’s. My work centres around students from colonised and Commonwealth countries who attended King’s between the 1920s and 1960s, interrogating how they complicate existing historical narratives of migration and decolonisation. During my PhD, I have attended and presented my research at several international historical conferences. I have been lucky enough to travel to the Netherlands, North Carolina in the US, and Denmark to do so!

I have taught first-year and second-year undergraduate courses at King’s College London, which involved leading seminar classes and marking university assignments. In addition to my teaching responsibilities, I am currently the lead researcher on a project led by the Theology and Religious Department at King’s, which involves researching and writing a history of the Department since its establishment in the mid-nineteenth century.

I bring a wealth of expertise and experience to my tutoring. I love talking about and teaching History, especially with young people. I firmly believe that there is no boring History, merely boring ways of teaching it! I am also an expert marker, with a wealth of experience providing feedback on essays and extended research projects. Through my training at Humanitas Learning, I have learnt to channel this experience into assessing the major exam boards at GCSE and A-level.

Drawing on my extensive knowledge and academic success, I am able to inspire students to reach their full potential. My style is engaging, informative, and tailored to the needs of the individual pupil.

I grew up and still live in London, although I have betrayed my South London roots by moving north of the river. Outside work, I am an amateur pianist, runner, and cyclist.

  • Chris Steadman-South

    Chris Steadman-South

    TUTOR OF RELIGIOUS STUDIES

    #fhtogglels/Read Full Bio/Close/eb

Hello, I’m Chris, a long-standing Head of Religious Studies in Sheffield, teaching over 400 students a year and consistently achieving excellent GCSE and A level results for 17 years. I love teaching: the colour, creativity, and compassion of bringing world views alive never feels like work. Building on my Politics and Philosophy degree from the University York, I gained a Masters in Teaching and Learning from the University of Leeds and have tutored alongside school teaching for several years.

Tutoring one-to-one is a privilege. I draw on my proven classroom success to bring learning alive, with students making fantastic progress and achieving top results. I combine research in cognitive neuroscience with outstanding teaching expertise to help students understand their own memory, focus on what they don’t know, and develop powerful revision skills that translate into the highest grades.

My expertise is strengthened by my role as Principal Examiner at Pearson Edexcel, where I write GCSE exam papers and mark schemes and lead two Islam papers, with a sharp focus on quality, detail, and professionalism. Alongside this, I bring an in-depth knowledge of Islam—a lifelong passion that continues to fascinate me and inspires my students. Beyond teaching, I’m a keen marathon runner and enjoy competitive sport, playing both football and rugby.
